Fancy Last Names helps you find one surname that fits: for a character in a story or game, a pen name, or simply because you love names. You bring a feeling (old money, French, dark, soft) and narrow 385 real surnames down to the one.

Real names, real meanings

Many name lists mix invented names in with real ones and give them meanings nobody can trace. We don’t. Every name here is a real surname: it appears in the 2010 US Census, or Wiktionary records it as a surname. Every meaning comes from that name’s Wiktionary entry, and each name’s details link to the exact revision we used. 254 of our names have a cited meaning. Where a source gives none, we show none rather than guess.

What is our own work

Choosing which names feel “fancy”, and grouping them by vibe (old money, French & Norman, nature, soft & romantic, dark & gothic, noun names), is our editorial judgement. So is the one-line wording of each meaning, which we keep to what the cited text says.
